2K / Two-Shot Molding
2K / Two-Shot Molding
Two materials or two colors injected into one mold in a single machine cycle. No bonding, no second operation and no handling between shots — a multi-color toothbrush handle, a hard-soft grip or a clear window in a colored housing comes out of the press finished.

Three Methods
How the second shot reaches the part.
The method sets the mold cost and the cycle time. We choose it from your part geometry, volume and the two materials — and explain the choice in the DFM report.
Method 01
Rotary Platen
The mold half rotates 180° after the first shot, carrying the substrate under the second barrel while a new first shot fills the empty cavity.
Best for high volumes · toothbrush handles · knobs · two-color housings
Method 02
Core-Back
A movable core blocks part of the cavity during the first shot, then retracts to open the space that the second material fills — no rotation needed.
Best for windows · seals · buttons in one plane · simpler 2K tools
Method 03
Transfer
The first-shot part is moved by robot or hand into a second cavity on the same or another machine — the lowest tooling cost, ideal to prove a design.
Best for lower volumes · prototypes · very large parts · inserts
Choosing the Process
Two-shot or overmolding?
Both put two materials on one part. The difference is tooling investment against cycle cost — and we run both, so the advice is not biased toward one machine.
This page
2K / Two-Shot
- One machine, one cycle, no handling between shots
- Lowest cost per part at medium and high volumes
- Best repeatability — alignment fixed by the mold
- Higher mold investment; needs a double-injection press

In-House Equipment
Our double-injection presses.
Two barrels, one clamp. Three double-injection machines run alongside our 25 standard presses, so 2K parts move straight into production after the mold trial.
- Two independent injection units for two materials or colors
- Rotary platen and core-back tooling both supported
- Clear and optical resins molded in a controlled area
- T1 samples measured on the CMM before approval
